Ancient prisons of the Praetorian Palace

Reopened to the public on July 24, 2020, as a place of memory to be rediscovered, the former Feltrine Prisons occupy the basement and lower ground floor of the sixteenth-century Palazzo Pretorio, formerly the Municipal Archives.
Accompanied by an evocative play of light that seems to evoke the illumination produced by the flashlights of the jailers, the visitor enters with a vague reverential awe into these dungeons that have housed crooks of all kinds since their founding. The massive doors, complete with peephole for the guards, certainly did not allow dreams of adventurous escapes: on the contrary, they remarked without appeal on a definitive state of detention. Of a charm all their own, such as to arouse genuine admiration for their anonymous authors, were the graffiti on the wall: traces of a last gasp of pride by those who were often all too aware of the fate that awaited them.

Access to the prisons, which is restricted and intended for small groups, is allowed only during evening hours from 8 to 11 pm. A choice necessitated by the current sanitary condition, but at the same time as very appropriate to add a pinch of spice to a highly recommended visit.
